Warship Weekend 11 – 12th July 09

Its hard to believe that a year has past already and another National Warship Weekend has been and gone. For members of GSSMS this is a sad occasion as it marks the end of weeks of preparation and set back that ultimately results in some strong comradeship between us. This year was no different and as usual the lads all mucked in to make this show one of the best on the model boating calender.

Wow look at the interest in the show

As usual Saturday was supposed to be a low key a fair. However, as it happens we made it into the the top ten of events to be seen that weekend in the Whats on Guide featured in the Evening Times. Combine this with some good weather and an amazing turnout from modelers and we had one hell of an event resulting in one of the busiest days we have seen at the pond.

Sunday brought more modelers and some unsettled weather but the resolve of those attending was unshaken. I could spend all day describing what went on that day but I think I will just guide you to some of the short clips (some not so short) that have been submitted to Youtube.

Competitions and Raffle Winners

HMS Brighton Best in Show Winner

The unsettled weather made no impact upon the competitions held for best model in show and team maneuvers. All models on display were automatically entered into the best in show and the lucky winner was garym (forum name) with his superbly turned out HMS BRIGHTON. The runner up for best in show was Chris Bullock (kown on the forums as Chris the Boatman) for a stunning model of HMS Edinburgh.

Well done to the junior team

Well done to the junior team

Nine teams of three went in for the team maneuvers – where members had to show knowledge in naval terms and practical skills in maneuvering their models around a set course in various convoy formations. Teams were very tight in their formations and eventually it came down to just three. It took a mere 15 minutes to determine the winner though as one team had to pull out through engine trouble. The winners Alistair, Wee Chris and Nathan proudly display their medals in the attached photo.

After the award ceremony the raffle was drawn in front of a very eager crowed. There were 4 prizes up for grabs – A model kit of the Amile Robin, a kit of HMS Snowberry, and two ready to run models. The Amile Robin went to a Jerry Marchbank on green ticket 285 while the model of HMS Snowberry went to Davie Howie of Greenock. The RC Quadbike was taken by green ticket 151 and last but not least the ready to run battleship was taken by the proud wee chap featured opposite on green ticket 370. Well done everyone we hope you all have meny hours of fun with your prizes.

We would like to thank all those members of this club and other clubs that helped make the event the success it was. We would also like to thank Richmond Model Boat Club again for allowing us to borrow their harbor system – it always enhances the photos of ship in port. We would like to thank the staff of Glasgow City Council who worked in the background helping to prepare the park for the event and for providing the extra tables needed to support the extensive display. We would also like to than PS Ship for the donation of this years raffle prize and for being there to answer any questions for modellers or other wise relating to the fixture and fittings of model warships. We would also like to thank GOALs Five Aside Football for letting us have use of their facilities over the two days – it was much appreciated. Finally we would like to thank all those who attended from the Sea Cadets – and yes you are forgiven for nearly sinking a ship.
