EVENTS 2010

SouthSide Festival 22nd May 2010

Running for three years now the Southside Festival is once again upon us and GSSMS has the opportunity to show the visiting public what model boating is all about. This year we shall provide the opportunity for anyone who does not have an RC model boat the opportunity to try one out. Members of GSSMS and other clubs in and around Glasgow shall demo the competitive side of the hobby with a light hearted Wee Nip race in an attempt to win the coveted Wee Nip Challenge. Race kicks off at 2pm. The winner shall proudly take home a black ash and chrome trophy that any wife would be proud of. If we can get enough modellers interested then there will be a demonstration of nip combat where Wee Nips are armed with a razor sharp cocktail stick on the bow and a vulnerable balloon on the stern. Nips are then unleashed against each other in a gladiatorial challenge until they are knocked out. “There can only be one”. Come see how experienced sailors are tested to the brink in this nail biting extravaganza. In addition there will be the usual raffle and plenty of opportunity for a natter.

Start of Season Sail 18th April 2010

The first event of the year in the GSSMS calender. This tends to be an event where members can show of their new boats that they have been working on over the winter period.  Feel free to come along for a chat and sail.

Don’t have a boat. Don’t worry. We have a selection of hands on boats for hire if you really want to give the hobby a try but are unsure about building your own model.  The Start of Season sail is one of those events that welcomes Wee Nip races and would encourage anyone who has one to come along and have some fun.  Tea and Coffee also available.

EVENTS 2009

Start of Season Sail 19th April 2009

The first event of the year in the GSSMS calender. This tends to be an event where members can show of their new boats (builds) that they have been working on over the winter period. A quiet affair that has steadily been building momentum in recent years and is pretty well attended by model boaters and members of the public a like. Feel free to come along for a chat and sail. Don’t have a boat. Don’t worry. We have a selection of hands on boats for hire if you really want to give the hobby a try but are unsure (or can’t wait to) about building your own model.

Kilmacolm Agricultural Show 9th May 2009

Just had word from the organisers that the Kilmacolm Agricultural Show is on the 9th of May this year. For anyone that has never been before this is an open air event osteed by the Kilmacolm Agricultural Society. GSSMS have been invited for some 16 years now and still remains a popular show for our members (weather permitting). Good food, free whisky on sample tumbola, farm animals, horse jumping, among lots of other entertainment. Last year was a hoot. A couple of the guys built bumper boats for the kids to sail and boy did they love em. I was approached a couple of times by the parents asking where they could purchase them. I said they “couldn’t as we had built them”. The reply was, what every entrepreneur wanted to hear, can i buy it! Unfortunately, I am no entrepreneur and said no because they are made of fighting foam from Poundland and icecream tubs from Azda.

South Side Festival 23rd & 24th May 2009

This will be the second year that GSSMS has participated at the South Side Festival. Unlike last year though this years event will take place over two days with plenty of entertainment for all the family. Thats double the fun so if your a model boater come along and have a family day out. For those used to visiting GSSMS in Queens Park please note that there will be parking restrictions in place with no vehicle movements from 10am till 5:30pm. National Model Warship Weekend 11th & 12th July 2009

Warship to invade city parkFollowing the success of the first national model warship show in Queens Park, Glasgow on the 12 and 13th  July 2008 GSSMS are happy to announce it will be repeated in 2009. The show runs over two days on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of July. Due to the lack of overnight security, the 11th shall be a small affair with GSSMS making its facilities (clubhouse, pond, etc) available to anyone with an interest in modeling and sailing warships.

The idea is to allow anyone traveling some distance the opportunity to sail and or practice team maneuvers as well as the opportunity to make use of Glasgow City Centre for some retail therapy in the evening. While maintaining all of the above, Sunday shall be the main thrust of the show and extend to include full pond side, free sailing, competition for best model and team maneuvers, an extensive raffle together with the usual tea, coffee, soft drinks and light snacks. More importantly though is the opportunity for you to display your favourite model/s and the opportunity to meet and greet colleagues from all over the country that share a similar interest in warship modeling.

Queens Park is located on the South side of Glasgow with the clubhouse and pond clearly visible from Pollokshaws Road. Entrance to the show can also be gained from Pollokshaws Road via the entrance at GOALS. From there just follow the signs to the pond. Please note that there is a 5mph speed limit in the park and all vehicles must give way to pedestrians. Adequate parking can be found on the grass verge adjacent to the clubhouse. Spill over parking can be found in the area surrounding the park.

Scotland is awash with relatively cheap good quality accommodation and Glasgow is no exception. Accommodation can be sourced from as little as £12 per night per person (based on 3 sharing). Etap hotel Springfield Quay, Glasgow is little more than 2.5 miles from Queens Park and less than 0.5 miles from the Glasgow City Centre.

This year GSSMS has joined forces with the South Side Festival to host another spectacular event in the park which you are invited to. Although the emphasis is on yachting GSSMS would like to see other models on display so if you have a model that is a recent build or one that hasn’t seen the light of day for a few years then this could be the event for you. The event will have plenty of free sailing andif you have a competitive streak, along witha Wee Nip, you may be interested in a race or two with some of the other lads.South Side Festival Poster
